Easy Secrets to Healthy Eating

Subway bakes fresh whole-wheat bread. We already knew that. And they have some decent vegetables to choose from. But recently I discovered something that makes it so much better: their Vegimax vegetarian patty. Here’s what I put on my sandwich now:

• Whole Wheat or Honey Oat (same as Whole Wheat plus some oat flakes sprinkled on top), toasted without cheese, with Vegimax patties
• Avocado spread (you get a generous two scoops of what seems to be pure avocado)
• Spinach
• Tomato slices
• Cucumber slices
• Onions
• Green pepper
• Olives
• Oil (only a bit, to taste, because their oil is mostly canola with a bit of olive)
• Black pepper (no salt)

A foot-long costs only about $7 dollars, depending on how they add it up (Vegimax doesn’t qualify for the $5 foot-long deal, but chicken breast does btw).

I like to go to Rubio’s and order a bean and cheese burrito (cheap). Then I do the following:

• Change tortilla to whole-wheat
• Change beans to black beans
• Remove the cheese

Now that you have a really healthy base, you can add:

• Guacamole (extra charge)
• Cabbage
• Tomatoes
• Onions
• “Fresca” sauce (like pico de gallo)

and, if you want:

• Letttuce
• Grilled vegetables (extra charge)

Total cost: less than $5.
